Riding for the Feeling

The big news around here these days is that Jasper is a real bike riding kid. For some reason, above and beyond all the rest of the things he has learned to do in his life, this one strikes me as the most amazing. It takes such bravado to hurl yourself off into space on two wheels, though the payoff is huge. As Jasper said to me, "it's the closest thing to flying I've ever done." It must be the memory of summers spent biking around dirt roads in South Carolina that really helps me feel a deep kinship to his childhood now. So much of his life in the golden state of California has been so vastly different from my own upbringing that I feel as though I am raising a different species altogether. Many of these differences are enviable but it's good to have some continuuity in childhood experiences to trigger memories of my own. It helps me feel what it is to be a kid again, sailing around on my princess bike with the banana seat trying to pop wheelies like my brother or flying down a hill hands free. Which is why, when he wanted to go offroading down the meadow hill, I knew there was no stopping him anyway. After the inevitable "crash down" and good cry, he got back up and wanted to do it all over again.

Even the deer were impressed to see Jasper on a bike.Post crash down regroupingGoing for it again

Joye, I'm glad I found this beautiful tribute to your childhood memories. The memory of learning to ride a bike in our yard on a little hill (very little) at our home on the hill of Black River Swamp brings me pleasure. You are gifted, Joye, in photography and in writing very well. Keep using your creativity to bring joy to others. Jasper is adorable, and I know Patty is proud of him. Love, Great Aunt Wynnette (presently 89 years old)

Thank you so much, Wynnette! It's wonderful to know that you are reading this blog .Love,Joye
